What is Agorastore's role?

Understanding Agorastore's role as an intermediary, the two types of sales, and who can bid.

👤

This article is for both buyers and sellers.

Summary

  • Agorastore connects sellers (public authorities, companies) with buyers, both individuals and professionals.
  • There are two types of sales: brokered sales and public auctions (with our auctioneer), with different roles for Agorastore in each.
  • Bidding is open to everyone; some sales are reserved for authorized professional buyers.

1. Agorastore's role as an intermediary

Agorastore is neither the owner nor the seller of the items listed on the platform. Its role is to act as a trusted intermediary by providing:

  • connections between sellers and buyers;
  • the publication and management of listings;
  • tools to bid and track sales;
  • oversight of the sales process (registration, bidding, confirmation, payment, collection);
  • user support through customer service.

2. Two types of sales, two levels of involvement

Brokered sale

Agorastore connects buyers and sellers without being involved in payment, collection, or viewing: these steps remain organized directly between the two parties. Agorastore acts as a broker and platform host.

Public auction (with our auctioneer)

Agorastore handles payment and guarantees the proper execution of the sale through to delivery of the item, in order to secure the transaction for both parties. The bid then becomes legally binding as soon as the hammer falls.

🛡️

The type of sale also affects which warranties apply: see Is there a warranty on items sold on Agorastore?

3. Who can take part in bidding

Bidding is open to everyone: individuals, professionals, public bodies, and associations.

Some sales are reserved for authorized professional buyers (for example, rolling stock dealers): these are marked with a "Sale reserved for professionals" banner. This is a choice made by certain sellers, particularly for warranty-related reasons on the items sold.

For these reserved sales, see Request to take part in a restricted sale.

Our tips

  • Before bidding, check the listing for the type of sale (brokered or public auction) and any participation conditions.
  • If you're unsure about a sale, contact customer service.

How can I tell if a sale is brokered or a public auction?

This information appears on the listing, in the sale details.

Can I bid if I'm an individual?

Yes, except on sales explicitly reserved for authorized professionals.
